One of the most incredible ways to visit Machu Picchu is through the Salkantay trek. The Salkantay trail crosses the imposing Salkantay snow-capped mountain, the highest peak in the Vilcabamba mountain range, glacial mountains, lagoons and the cloud forest.

*Designed for experienced active travellers in excellent physical condition. Itineraries may include full-day hikes (sometimes at high altitude) or full-day climbing excursions. Trails often include steep ascents/descents on mountainous terrain, with some exposed sections.
* The Salkantay trek offers two types of accommodation. For the three nights while on the campsite, choose to stay in a double shared tent or double shared dome.

ITINERARY

DAY 1
CUSCO / ARRIVAL

Upon arrival, take a transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day will be free for you to explore the beautiful city of Cusco and its surroundings.

DAY 2
CUSCO / MOLLEPATA / CHALLACANCHA / HUMANTAY LAKE / SORAYPAMPA

An early start, depart towards the Salkantay trailhead. We will travel through Mollepata town and enjoy breakfast before reaching Challacancha, where the trail starts.
Hike on what was the Inca Trail while having a view of the Salkantay mountain in the distance. Hike up to the emerald colour Humantay lake. And we will spend the night at Soraypampa.

DAY 3
SORAYPAMPA / SALKANTAY PASS / HUAYRACMACHAY / CHAULLAY COLPAMPA

A challenging day. Hike up to the Salkantay Pass on a zig-zag path while enjoying fantastic views, which are worth making many photos stops. After the Salkantay pass (4,630 m / 15,228 ft). Continue downhill to Huayracmachay while viewing a change in the landscape. Proceed hiking down to the campsite located at 2900m/9514ft.

DAY 4
CHAULLAY / COLCAPAMPA / LORETA LA PLAYA

A relaxing day, hike through dense vegetation and beautiful scenery while enjoying views of local flora such as a variety of orchids and impressive waterfalls of approximately 80 meters.
The downhill continues to Santa Teresa Valley, Lucmabamba - Loreta la playa, and then to the campsite.

DAY 5
LORETA LA PLAYA / LLACTAPATA / AGUAS CALIENTES

Start hiking through the sub-tropical vegetation to the village of Lucmabamba, where an original Inca Trail remains today. Climb a gradual uphill climb to Llactapata (2700m), which shows a stunning view of the backside of Machu Picchu.
Later, take the hydroelectric train to Aguas Calientes town to spend the night.

DAY 6
AGUAS CALIENTES / MACHU PICCHU / CUSCO

An exciting day awaits ahead. We will start early to reach the mystic sanctuary of Machu Picchu. Those who feel energetic today can hike 1-hr up to the citadel entrance.
Upon arrival, start a 2-hour guided tour through one of the world's modern seven winders, Machu Picchu.
After touring the citadel, return to your hotel in Cusco.

DAY 7
CUSCO / DEPARTURE DAY

Concluding your Cusco & The Salkantay trek trip. We hope you'll join us again to explore another part of South America!

VISAS
Please visit the relevant consular website of the countries you'll be visiting for more detailed and up-to-date visa information. If you need a visa, please obtain your visa in advance.

HEALTH AND CERTIFICATIONS
Peru does not require any vaccination certificates from travelers to enter the country. However, travelers should stay up-to-date on their vaccines including measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine, varicella (chickenpox) vaccine, hepatitis A, B, typhoid, rabies and yellow fever vaccine. If your itinerary includes the departments/states of Amazonas, Loreto, San Martin, Ucayali, Junin and Madre de Dios, it's recommended to vaccinate against Hepatitis B and yellow fever.

SAFETY
Pickpocketing is common in certain areas/cities. If you do find time to explore on your own, below are some key precautions to take:

Request a taxi service through the hotel staff. You can also call EASY TAXI and UBER, both of which operate in a few cities: Lima, Arequipa, Piura, Chiclayo and Cusco.
Wear your backpack/bag to the front when walking through bigger crowds.
Do not carry your wallet in the back pocket of your trousers.
Avoid wearing fancy jewelry.
Leave original documents, credit cards in the hotel safe box, taking the bare minimum of cash with you. It’s always a good idea to hide cash in different parts of your clothes.
A neck/waist money belt can be very handy to keep cash hidden.
In restaurant/cafes, do not hang your bag/backpack on the arm of the chairs or leave it sitting on the floor.
Always take note of the serial numbers of your larger bills (ie: 20, 50, 100 and 200 Soles) before paying taxi drivers and small shops. There were a few cases where travelers were told their bills were fake. By taking note of the serial numbers before use, you stand a better chance of getting your money back.
At night, always walk on well lit streets.
Withdraw cash only during the day and from ATMs located inside banks or guarded ATMs.
Cover ATMs keyboard with one hand when typing your pin number.
Do not get into a car by someone’s invitation, even if it's a police car.

TRANSPORTATION
Transportation in Peru is not that well organized. However, public transportation is available to reach tourist areas such as Miraflores, Lima Centre, Barranco etc. To use public transportation, please ask the hotel staff for detailed information.
Another way to move around is through radio taxis. In Peru, the taxi system is not regulated. Taxis do not use meters which means you must negotiate the taxi fare first before getting into a taxi. Otherwise, risk paying the foreigner price. To get an idea of cost, calculate your transit time. If a taxi ride takes 20 min, the cost of the ride will be roughly 15 to 20 soles. From Miraflores to Lima Centre, it usually takes around 15 min which should cost around 10 to 15 soles. From/to the International Airport, you should arrange a taxi with your hotel prior to arrival/departure for a fixed fare of USD $20. You can also take a cab on the street but keep in mind, most of these taxis do not have a permit to enter into the airport so you will be dropped off outside the airport.
